Amit LIVE! - 09.04.2011

[This is the 3rd edition of Minimum Maksimum - Season of musical singularities. This time, we're going to penetrate the drum and bass territory in the search for what's still new and surprising in the scene. Our guest will be one of the most original representatives of this genre - AMIT.

Inspirowała go hinduska muzyka Naushada, głos Muhannada Rafi i Mukesha, ale też The Cure, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, czy Africa Bambaata. DJ Storm i Klute.

W 2004, w jednej z selekcji Klute'a usłyszał go Goldie i zaproponował mu wydanie kolejnego singla - „Gatecrasher / Pirates”, nakładem jego kultowej wytwórni Metalheadz

[Amit’s passion for music was formed at an early age. After originally pursuing a career in computer programming, he changed course to embarked on an HND in Music Technology at Thames Valley University, learning the processes involved in music production and experimenting with a myriad of different sounds from dub/ reggae to electro and punk rock.

Amit’s interest in Drum & Bass developed through his love of Belgium hardcore, championed by producers such as Joey Beltram and Fran Dewulf. It was the late 80’s and early 90’s and things were changing; there was a new sound emerging: sped up hip hop breaks - Drum & Bass. Listening to the sounds of Source Direct, Photek and Goldie all helped to anchor Amit’s journey. For the next few years, he continued crafting his sound and developing his vision. With influences from the lush Hindi sound scores of Naushad, haunting vocals of Muhammad Rafi, Mukesh, to The Cure, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Radiohead and African Bambaata, Amit’s unique sound was born. Described as ‘fascist tribal dub with a warm eastern/gothic twist’. Amit’s big break came when his debut track ‘Erazer’ was put out on producer Digital’s label and was warmly received by DJ Storm, Klute and various underground DJs.

He was introduced to Klute and his label Commercial Suicide and it was there that he found the home for his future releases, headed by a team that understood and supported his vision. 2003 saw his first release on the label, ‘Dual Sense / Roots’ and that’s when things started gaining momentum. His sound was new, different, and beautifully unnerving. Half tempo building, remnants of D&B and dark tribal energy make Amit's music hard to categorise and the only real way it can be explained is by listening. And that is what people did, until eventually it started landing in all the right dj- stacks. Randall started dropping his track into his set, Grooverider and Bailey playing the track on BBC’s Radio 1 and 1Xtra, even the legendary John Peel (RIP) selected it for his show. After hearing Amit’s track during a Klute set, Goldie offered to release his next 12” on his infamous Metalheadz label and in 2004, AMIT released the hypnotic ‘Gatecrasher/Pirates’ on Metalheadz.

In 2005 Amit was invited to play his first ever live show ‘Red Zone’, Holland, sharing the bill with Goldie to a crowd of 1,600. The set went down a storm and since then his live shows received top billing from Tokyo to San Francisco. Since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Never Ending’ in 2006, Amit has been hailed as one of the most distinctive and original voices within the electronic music industry. He is credited with creating a new and innovative sub genre within Drum and Bass, which has influenced a whole generation of new music artists working within electronica.

Amit’s eagerly anticipated album '9 Times' will be released in May 2011 on Commercial Suicide and the title track is already taking club land by storm. 2011 looks set to be a very busy year for one of the most innovative producers in the scene today, an artist who continues to challenge the ideas of Drum and Bass.

At Minimum Maksimum Amit will begin his forthcoming album tour!]
